Nurse Manager and Leadership EBP Competencies Scale
Copyright, Gallagher-Ford & Caramanica et.al., 2021
Description: This self-assessment tool is designed to help nurse managers evaluate their leadership competencies in fostering and sustaining evidence-based practice (EBP) within healthcare settings. Developed by Caramanica & Gallagher-Ford et al. (2021), the tool outlines 22 key competencies across three domains:
· Leading EBP: Assesses the nurse manager’s ability to champion, prioritize, and influence EBP initiatives aligned with organizational goals.
· Building Infrastructure for EBP: Evaluates readiness, resource allocation, and policy alignment to support EBP integration.
· Promoting EBP: Measures efforts to educate, empower, and recognize staff engagement in EBP, while reinforcing a culture of evidence-informed decision-making.
Each competency is rated on a 4-point Likert scale - 1 = Not Competent to 4 = Highly Competent; a score of 3 or higher on each item represents competence.
Psychometrics: Indices of internal consistency ranged between 0.895 and 0.919 on the 1st round. On the 2nd round, Cronbach's alpha ranged between 0.875 and 0.901. On both administrations of the survey, internal consistency coefficients were very high for all 3 sections. These results show that: 1) items within the same section provide similar outcomes and are, therefore, indicators of the same constructs; and 2) internal consistency coefficients showed minimal variations across the two administrations of the survey and, therefore, constitute substantial evidence of reliability. (Caramanica et al., 2022).
